Laptop touchpad not working (error) problems and solutions

1. Laptop touchpad not working due to intentionally disabled via keyboard

For this problem, the solution is simpler than others. However, some people don't know this information. On most laptops there is a button to enable and disable the Touchpad function located on the keyboard. It is usually located between F1-F12, because each laptop is different. Usually the reason the touchpad is turned off is so that when typing does not interfere with the typing process or when using a mouse does not interfere with the performance of the mouse.

In the example above, to activate and deactivate the touchpad, use the Fn+F7 and FN+F6 key combination. The symbol can be like the top picture (hand icon) or the picture below it (big box icon with 2 small boxes below it). Each laptop, even though the brand is the same, sometimes has a different button placement. There are also those without the Fn key combination. *The tip to know is, if the touchpad symbol on the keyboard is the same color as the Fn key, then to disable or enable the touchpad is accompanied by pressing the Fn key simultaneously. If the color is different from the Fn key, then there is no need to press the Fn key..

2. Problematic Drivers

Problematic touchpad drivers can also cause touchpad errors, whether it won't move, can move but sometimes can't be moved or the pointer moves around on its own. To fix this, first try uninstalling the touchpad driver. Enter the device manager by pressing the Windows+R on the keyboard, after the menu appears Run, type devmgmt.msc. Click on the Mice and other pointing devices. After the list of devices comes out, then right-click and select Uninstall. Wait for the process to finish. If this method does not work, try downloading the latest touchpad (pointing device) driver from the official website and install the driver.

3. Windows Trouble

The touchpad error problem can also be caused by a problematic Windows operating system. Whether it's caused by a corrupt registry or file system and so on. The solution to this problem is to reinstall Windows. Tips to make sure whether it is really the windows that is problematic is to use an operating system that is booted from a USB or CD. Be it linux or other live USB / CD such as DLCboot, hirent and so on. I usually use linux to make sure.
Boot using a USB/CD that has linux loaded on it. The trick is to change the boot order in the bios by making the USB/CD at the top of the order. Next, try using the touchpad function on the linux environment. If using linux is no problem, there is a possibility that the installed Windows operating system is problematic. The easiest way is to reinstall Windows to fix it. Or use party software when overcoming a corrupt file system or registry, but this method is usually more complicated.
4. Touchpad hardware is broken
If the solution 1-3 has not yielded any results, there is a possibility that the hardware is faulty. Either the flexible touchpad may be broken or not connected properly. Or indeed the touchpad hardware is damaged. The solution is to replace the touchpad with a new one. Please take it to the service center if you are not too experienced to disassemble the laptop. Because the touchpad replacement process is rather complicated and sometimes there are rarely spare parts available for laptop touchpads. Usually, the price is many times more expensive than adding a USB mouse.

5. Damage to the Laptop Motherboard

If you have replaced the Touchpad, the problem still cannot be resolved, there may be a damaged motherboard component. The solution is to replace the motherboard or motherboard service. This option is more expensive than replacing the touchpad. Most people prefer to add a USB mouse if there is damage to the touchpad hardware or motherboard because the cost is cheaper.
