How to Upgrade Nikon DSLR Camera Firmware

Upgrading camera software is sometimes needed to get new facilities or better performance. In addition to the above purposes, it can also be used to repair if an error occurs in the camera. This time I will discuss how to upgrade Nikon DSLR firmware. The camera we will use for this experiment is the Nikon D5200. For other types it seems that the method is not much different.

Okay, first we look at the default firmware version of the camera we are going to upgrade. Because if the default firmware version of our camera is the latest version, I don't think there is a need to upgrade. Because failure to upgrade can cause camera malfunctions. here's how to see the camera's default firmware version.

How to view nikon firmware version:

  1. Turn on the camera.
  2. Press the camera's MENU button and select setup menu (wrench icon) and select firmware version to display the camera's firmware version.
  3. Check the camera firmware version.
  4. Make sure that the downloaded firmware version is newer than the default camera version to upgrade.

The default firmware of the nikon camera that we will use for the experiment is version c 1.02, while the latest version is version c 1.03. The following are the changes in version c 1.03:

  • Reduces noise (horizontal lines) in movies shot with 1280×720; 60p or 1280×720; 50p selected for Frame size/frame speed.
  • Fixed an issue with the camera freezing when the clear image sensor option was used.
After we make sure that the firmware we are going to upgrade is a newer version, next are the steps on how to upgrade Nikon firmware, with nikon D5200 as a test material.

How to Upgrade Nikon DSLR Camera Firmware

  1. Create a folder on your computer's hard disk and name it as you wish.
  2. Firmware download (for nikon D5200 file name "F-D5200-V103W.exe") and save it in the folder created in Step 1.
  3. Run F-D5200-V103W.exe to parse the following files into a folder named "D5200Update": D5200_0103.bin (i.e. camera firmware)
  4. Using the card slot or card reader, copy "D5200_0103.bin" to the formatted memory card in the camera.
  5. Insert the memory card into the camera and turn on the camera.
  6. Select Firmware version in the setup menu and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware update.
  7. Once the update is complete, turn off the camera and remove the memory card.
  8. Ensure that the firmware has been updated to its new version.
