How to Check License (Copyright) songs / music on Youtube with Youtube Music Policies

Youtube is one of the largest video service providers in the world. Everyone is free to upload videos without being limited by quota. However, YouTube is also strict in terms of copyrighting a work. Be it video, image or audio.

YouTube algorithms are able to detect which images, videos and audio are plagiarized. One that is often banned from YouTube is because it uses audio that has a License (Copyright) that has been registered on YouTube. As a result there is a copyright warning from YouTube on our account. The problem is sometimes we don't know which audio is copyrighted. Or sometimes we record a video while accidentally there is commercial music audio recorded during shooting.

Youtube itself now provides a facility to check which audio songs/music are copyrighted, and what copyrights are given to the audio. This facility is called Youtube Music Policies or in Indonesian called Youtube Music policies. To use this facility you can open the link directly:

  • Youtube Music Policies
  • or if you are already in the YouTube audio library, you can select the menu music policies which is located at the bottom left.

Youtube Music Policies Usage Description:

  • In the search field on the top right, you can enter the title of the song or band for which you want to find usage information.
  • After finding and matching the song we are looking for, click on the song title, then information about the song's usage policy will appear.

Example:

  • If you use this songPlaybackCan be watched anywhere except in 2 countries pixel-vfl3z5wfw-8091706MonetizationYou cannot monetize videos pixel-vfl3z5wfw-8091706If you perform this song againPlaysCan be streamed worldwideMonetizationRights to revenue share pixel-vfl3z5wfw-8091706The copyright owner may change its policies or take action on your video in a different way than described here.

In the above caption there are 2 options:

If you use this song (using the original audio recording from the copyright owner of the music)

  • Screening mentioned that there are 2 countries that cannot play the song, if you click on the icon  pixel-vfl3z5wfw-8091706 then the caption appears: Your video cannot be watched in 2 countries: Germany, Switzerland.
  • Monetization : It says you can't monetize videos, if you click on the icon pixel-vfl3z5wfw-8091706 then the caption appears: The copyright owner of this song may monetize your video, so ads will appear. This means that the copyright owner allows you to use his music on your video on the condition that the advertisement monetized by the copyright owner appears on your video. And you do not get a revenue share or income from serving ads on the videos you upload.

If you re-perform this song (you re-record the audio of the song that you play or perform yourself)

  • Screening Viewable worldwide. This means no country-specific restrictions on viewing your video
  • Monetization Entitled to a revenue share. This means that you can monetize the video with the song that you have performed yourself with a revenue sharing system. So the revenue from the ads that appear in the video will be shared between you and the copyright owner of the song.

But you also have to be careful, because copyright owners can change their licenses and usage policies at any time. Like my friend's experience, when using a song whose license was free, but over time the license changed, so the video was blocked.

If in the past there was no facility to delete songs from YouTube, of course this would threaten our account. Luckily there is now a facility to delete songs from YouTube, so you can delete the copyrighted song with the YouTube video editor facility.
